Pevensey Castle, Fallen Bastion
Cliff Moppett ©
This shows the southern side of the castle where the medieval inner bailey abutts the roman wall. The roman wall characterised by the red brick courses is to the right of the gateway.
In the foreground is a solid roman bastion which has been undermined by the sea which once lapped against it and has consequenly slipped down the slope. Most of the southern wall of the roman fort has been lost in this way.
